Our Herd

We believe that every equine deserves respect, love, compassion and dignity, regardless of age, health, or behavior. Hence, we pledge to do whatever we can to facilitate the ability of rescued horses to live out their lives in a safe and peaceful environment either in a new forever home or at Happy Trails for their remaining years.

Prospect Horses

A prospect rescue horse is one that shows promise for rehabilitation and training. These horses have come from various backgrounds, not only possible neglect or abandonment, but often situations in which, through no fault of their own, they were not given the opportunity to reach their full potential. Many prospect rescue horses demonstrate an adaptable nature, showing a willingness to learn and adjust to new environments. Patience, positive reinforcement, and consistent handling contribute to their progress.

Tex

Tex is a Thoroughbred gelding around 10 years old. You should see this fellow prance! Tex shines best in arena work and with intermediate riders, not trails.

Sapphire is a beautiful dapple grey mare around 7 years old. Although we think she had been ridden in the distant past, she will need to build trust to allow us to catch her easily as well as refresh training.

Sapphire

Charmarie came to us with Lightening after their owner suffered some serious health issues and could no longer care for them. She has been well loved and is registered. Charmarie is 25 years old and ridable. She is sweet and lovable and makes friends easily.

Companion Horses

A companion rescue horse is a gentle and understanding equine partner that, while not necessarily suitable for riding or strenuous activities, they excel in providing companionship and emotional support to humans and other horses. These horses include seniors who have retired from a life of work, horses with mild health issues that don’t impact their quality of life, or those with behavioral considerations that make them better suited as companions rather than riding animals.

Also known as Magic Kat; Miss Kitty; Kitty Kat; Katarina and more! Kat arrived here with her little buddy, Stewie in September 2022.

Kat

Bailey came to us starved for food - and loving attention. She had been thrown away as old and useless, but here we see the beautiful soul within and the kind love she wants to give.

Bailey

Jester is a mini donkey around 14 years old. He came to us through a network of friends and neighbors of the past owner who was having difficulties taking care of them due to his own health issues and finances. Jester came with his buddy, Tigger. Jester is friendly and happy-go-lucky fellow. He is small but mighty, built like a tank. He has started a strict diet since coming here and thankfully, got those WAY overdo hooves taken care of, slowly.

Jester

Scout, a beautiful Appaloosa colt, was discarded at auction, skin and bones thin, and pleading with his eyes for someone to care for him. We could not look away and now he is forever safe and loved. Scout, unfortunately has been diagnosed with EPM, a neurological disease and although he is not symptomatic, we will not know if he is ridable until next year.

Sanctuary Horses

Unlike other horses in the rescue, sanctuary rescue horses have a permanent home at the ranch and are not up for adoption. They have a stable and comfortable environment where they can live out the remainder of their lives in peace with the priority being the overall quality of life.

Chiquita was originally rescued from a slaughter truck leaving Warm Springs after a round up, packed in with several others. She has several deep trust issues after being rescued from cruel ownership.

Chiquita (Kita)

Honey came from another rescue in the Eugene valley that needed a foster for her. Well…. we became “foster failures” and immediately fell in love with her – and so did Chiquita! Her one eye and kissing spine makes her a poor prospect for rehoming, so she can stay with the others here.

Honey Girl

Sweet Pea is our Mammoth Donkey - aka Happy Trails Mascot! She is as sweet as her name and LOVES people! She can be found roaming around the ranch, monitoring all that goes on.

Sweet Pea

Lightening came to us with Charmarie after their owner suffered some serious health issues and could no longer care for them. She has been well loved and is registered. Lightening now is 28 years old but still sassy as can be! She is small but in charge!

Hoofprints in Our Heart

Though they no longer graze in our pastures, their memory lives on in the hoofprints they left on our hearts. Each of these remarkable souls has left an indelible mark on our hearts and has been an integral part of the Happy Trails Rescue family.

Sultanas previous owner had a terminal illness and feared she would end up in the wrong hands at risk of neglect, so he decided to euthanize her. Thankfully Dave and Dianne were able to intervene and care for her until she passed in 2022 at Happy Trails.

Puma

Puma was named this because he was attacked twice by cougars before he turned 6 months. He also was born with club foot that required surgery when he was three. He passed away from a bad case of cellulitis in 2023.

The Horses Who Started It All

Every rescue has a beginning — a moment when compassion becomes action. For Founders, Dianne and Dave Scott, it started with these horses who needed someone to say “yes” when the world had turned away.

Patches came to us as an old retiree from another rescue along with his best buddy Opal. He had a bad eye that eventually had to be removed. He left us at about the age of 28. He was a kind, gentle boy who was greatly loved. He passed away in 2020.

Patches

Freckles was rescued from over grazing in pasture, untouched for many years. She quickly bonded with Fremont and eventually she suffered a sunken coffin bone. She passed away in 2020.
