I have known Dianne and David Scott for a little over a year when I began volunteering at their newly acquired property outside of Tumalo being developed for a horse rescue ranch. First, let me say that I have never known two individuals as passionate, caring and loving of horses, other equines, and all other animals (chickens, dogs, cats, etc.) as Dianne and Dave.

Some have come from abusive and unsafe environments and have socialization issues with people as well as the herd. Dianne and Dave are devoted to rescuing these horses and obtaining whatever veterinary treatment and non-medical help and support they need to feel safe and comfortable. They also strive in helping them adjust to their new home and to those caring for them, and to appropriately interact with the rest of the herd. Sadly, there are also those that have been surrendered by their people who are no longer able to care for them. Dianne and Dave are happy to adopt those horses and to maintain good relationships with the owners who can visit them at the ranch whenever they like. Moreover, one of the goals of this amazing organization is to help other horse owners in the community in need of assistance, allowing them to keep their horses at home longer and avoiding or delaying the hard decision to surrender the horses they love. It is a testament to Dianne and Dave for giving to the community as well as providing a safe haven for the horses they rescue and adopt.

Volunteering at Happy Trails has been one of the most rewarding and fulfilling experiences of my life. I respect Dianne and Dave so much for all that they do and I appreciate learning from them. I love spending time with the herd, each of them so towering and strong, yet so majestic and graceful, instilling a great sense of calmness in me. They all have different “personalities” and I love watching how they act and the things they do interacting with those who care for them as well as the herd. I truly think they know they are lucky to be there and well taken care of, and they appreciate it. Above all, I find so much satisfaction knowing that the horses are safe and comfortable and can live in such a beautiful and peaceful environment. After all, this is where they have come, through whatever pathway, to live out the remainder of their days.

We had our horses for over 10 years when health concerns made us realize we needed to re-home them. Dianne and Dave are their owners now and I am so relieved that they are at Happy Trails Horse Rescue. Happy Trails is a nurturing place - spacious & clean - where rescues receive the best of care. I’m grateful for the life they’re given there.

The pens are large and each has a new shelter; new panels form a safe fence. Beyond the individual pens is a large field with grass, and trees for shade. The horses graze and roam about freely. I’m sure they love being out there.

Happy Trails has a barn with stalls and excellent accommodations for grooming and bathing horses. It is evident that Dianne and Dave prioritize the horses’ safety, health, and wellbeing - they most definitely get the veterinary and farrier care they need. We are able to visit the horses whenever we want, and I know they are loved. We couldn’t ask for anything better.

I must start by saying that Dianne and Dave truly love horses, simply because they are horses, and not because these wonderful animals can do something FOR them, like run around barrels or a race track. Dianne and Dave understand that horses have intrinsic value, and they have dedicated their lives to helping them, one horse at a time.

As long as I have known them, Dianne and Dave have always had the best interest of their horse family at heart. They go to an unbelievable amount of trouble to make life wonderful at Happy Trails for horses who have often had pretty terrible lives. Getting up in January,  before it’s light out, so that everyone gets fed on time takes real commitment.  I love going over and visiting and watching how the newer horses start to look happy instead of worried or shut down. It’s a wonderful sight.

I met Dianne, and later, Dave, when I was searching for the right rescue horse. My beloved Griffin had suddenly passed due to complications from Insulin Resistance, and her sister was alone for the first time in her 21 years. She was deeply depressed. Dianne, with the help of Dave and a friend, helped me find Rose, who turned out to be the perfect horse for my mare, Dulcita. It was an immediate best-friend scenario until Dulcita passed two years later.

I consider myself to be extremely fortunate to have gotten to know Dianne and Dave, and to have benefited from their love of horses and their commitment to changing the lives of the horses they rescue. Their  dedication to helping prospective adopters to find just the right horse for their situation is an added bonus, and one that I benefit from every day. Dianne’s and Dave’s brand of kindness, and their dedication to horses is an inspiration to me.
